Dr. Brandon Ross, Principal of Newberry High School, is a native of Columbia, SC. Prior to joining the Newberry High School community this school year, Dr. Ross worked in Richland School District 2 as a school administrator for the past 5 years. During his time in Richland 2 Dr. Ross was named South Carolina Association for School Administrator’s (SCASA) 2021 Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year. He was also SCASA’s nominee for National Assistant Principal of the Year. Dr. Ross also earned the designation of Emerging Leader by the South Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (SCASCD) where he served from 2020-2022. He now serves on SCASCD’s Emerging Leader Committee to provide professional development to new Emerging Leaders. After being named Principal, Dr. Ross earned the designation of Emerging Leader by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), the parent organization to SCASCD.
Prior to becoming a school administrator, Dr. Ross served as a School Counselor, Career Development Facilitator, and Adult Education Counselor. Dr. Ross also has an extensive formal education background as he earned his bachelor’s degree from South Carolina’s flagship university; The University of South Carolina. He later earned a Master’s of Education degree in Counselor Education from South Carolina State University and a second Master’s of Education degree in Educational Leadership from The University of South Carolina. Most recently, Dr. Ross earned his Doctorate of Education in Curriculum Studies from the University of South Carolina in 2022.
Dr. Ross states, “As Principal of Newberry High School I commit to you that we will continue to “Dominate in all Areas of Schooling!” Through Rigor, Relationship, Access, Accountability, Creativity, Collaboration, Engagement, and Equity we will serve as a leading innovator amongst high schools in our state and nationally. At Newberry High School, students will continue to “Set the Standard for Excellence” through our commitment to pursuing optimal outcomes in everything that we do.”
This school year Newberry High School has worked relentlessly to grow students academically and to maximize the overall student experience. Our students are matched with some of South Carolina’s best teachers. The faculty and staff at NHS have committed to our schools academic goals, which aim to address deficits in End of Course Exams, increase graduation rate, and increase college and career readiness. Dr. Ross hopes to make a positive difference in the lives of the countless students and families that he serves. He believes, “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” He desires to help elevate students to their next level academically and teachers to the next level in their professional practice.
