With a combined number of 48 years on the job, Newberry County School District has been blessed with a group of nine friends, advice givers, mentors, coaches, and inspirers – also known as the School Resource Officers. By definition, a school resource officer is a law enforcement officer that is responsible for safety and crime prevention in schools. In Newberry County, it means much more than that.
A common theme among these nine officers is their love for the students and the relationships they get to build with them. When asked what they are looking forward to during this next school year, Deputy Rebecca Ringer said it best:
“Seeing the smiling faces after a big win in a game or on a test; being an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, open arms to hug a child that needs a hug or provide advice on how to handle certain situations. The list could go on and on, but the point is seeing students of all ages succeed at what they work so hard at is always a pleasure to watch. On the other hand, it is also sad because relationships are built and at the end of the year you have to let go and watch them venture out on their own whether it be due to graduation or for summer break. The worry and concern for their well-being and safety is always there.”
The dedication that each of these officers have has made schools not just a place to learn the current curriculum but a place for students to cry, laugh, fail, and succeed with a friend standing beside them every step of the way.
To Ted Graham, Rebecca Ringer, Derrick Davis, Caleb K., Brett Watkins, Nick Brown, Clay Babb, McKeva Kinard-Shelton, and Adam Teseniar: Newberry County thanks you for not just keeping our students safe, but for being a friend to all of them.
